♟ Skill-based events

Chess events are skill-based competitions. Entry fees provide participation only and do not guarantee any prize.

💳 Payments & refunds

Payments are processed via PayPal. Duplicate payments must be reported within 14 days. Entry fees are otherwise non-refundable unless the event is cancelled.

📸 Results & media

Results and event media (photos/videos) may be published, including on websites and social media.

1. Introduction

These Chess Event Terms govern participation in chess competitions organised or facilitated by EVENNECT. They apply in addition to the main Terms & Conditions, Privacy Policy, Cookie Policy, and any other applicable EVENNECT policies published on EVENNECT.co.uk.

If there is any conflict between these Chess Event Terms and the general EVENNECT Terms, these Chess Event Terms will apply to the relevant chess event.

2. Event Organisation

EVENNECT acts as the organiser of chess events and is responsible for event administration, payment collection, prize distribution, and related event support.

The organising chess club is responsible for conducting matches, tournament operations, enforcing chess rules, applying fair play measures, and determining final rankings and winners.

3. Payments and Processing

All payments are processed via PayPal. EVENNECT acts as the merchant of record and is responsible for handling payment-related issues, including duplicate or erroneous transactions.

Any duplicate or incorrect payment must be reported to EVENNECT within 14 days of the transaction. Claims made after this period may not be eligible for review or refund.

4. Entry Fees and Refund Policy

All entry fees are non-refundable except in the following circumstances:

  • Duplicate or incorrect payments reported within 14 days
  • Cancellation of the event by EVENNECT or the organising chess club

If an event is cancelled, participants may be offered either:

  • A full refund, or
  • Transfer of entry to a rescheduled event, where applicable

No refund will be provided if a participant does not attend, arrives late, withdraws, misses a round, leaves the event early, or is unable to participate for any reason not caused by cancellation by EVENNECT or the club.

5. Fees and Revenue

EVENNECT may charge fees for organising and facilitating chess events. This may include a fixed service fee and/or a percentage-based commission or profit share from event entry fees.

By registering for an event, you acknowledge that a portion of entry fees may be retained by EVENNECT as payment for services provided, and the remaining funds may be allocated toward event costs, prize pools, operational expenses, and profit distribution.

6. Nature of Competition

All chess events are skill-based competitions. Winners are determined solely by match results, standings, and rankings. No element of chance is involved, and payment of an entry fee does not guarantee a prize.

7. Role of the Chess Club

The organising chess club acts as an independent adjudicator and is responsible for tournament structure, rule enforcement, fair play oversight, anti-cheating measures, and the official results.

All decisions made by the organising chess club in relation to gameplay, pairings, standings, rule interpretation, disqualification, and winners are final and binding. EVENNECT is not responsible for match outcomes, player performance, or adjudication decisions.

8. Fair Play and Conduct

Participants must comply with all rules, fair play standards, and conduct expectations set by EVENNECT and/or the organising chess club.

Cheating or unfair conduct is strictly prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Use of chess engines, external assistance, or unauthorised devices
  • Collusion or manipulation of results
  • Harassment, threatening conduct, abusive language, or disruptive behaviour
  • Any form of abuse toward organisers, club officials, staff, volunteers, or other participants

Any abuse, nuisance, or inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated.

9. Disqualification and Right to Refuse Participation

Important: EVENNECT and/or the organising chess club may refuse participation, suspend, remove, or disqualify any participant where necessary to maintain fair play, protect others, prevent fraud or abuse, or comply with legal obligations.

Participants engaging in cheating, abusive conduct, nuisance behaviour, threatening behaviour, fraud, or any serious disruption may be:

  • Refused entry or participation
  • Removed from the event venue or platform
  • Disqualified from the event
  • Banned from future EVENNECT events

In such cases, entry fees and/or prizes may be forfeited.

10. Prize Distribution

Prizes will be distributed by EVENNECT based on official results provided by the organising chess club.

EVENNECT reserves the right to verify results before payout and to withhold, adjust, or refuse prizes in cases involving rule violations, incomplete verification, disqualification, or disputes.

11. Complimentary Entries

The organising chess club may offer free or complimentary entry to selected players, including titled players.

All players receiving complimentary entry remain fully subject to these Chess Event Terms and all rules, obligations, restrictions, and conduct requirements that apply to paying participants, unless a specific written exception is clearly stated.

12. Event Changes and Cancellation

EVENNECT and/or the organising chess club reserve the right to cancel, reschedule, postpone, or modify an event where reasonably necessary, including due to venue issues, operational needs, safety concerns, technical failures, insufficient participation, or circumstances beyond reasonable control.

Any refund or transfer in such circumstances will be handled in accordance with Section 4 above.

13. Data Collection and Sharing

EVENNECT collects and processes participant data for the purpose of organising, managing, and administering chess events.

This may include
  • Name and contact details
  • Tournament participation data
  • Match results, standings, and rankings
  • Verification information where required

By registering for an event, you acknowledge and agree that:

  • Your data may be shared with the organising chess club for the purpose of running the event
  • Results and player information may be published publicly
  • Data may be shared with relevant chess organisations or federations, including the English Chess Federation (ECF), for rating, reporting, grading, or official records

All personal data is processed in accordance with the EVENNECT Privacy Policy.

14. Results, Winners, and Event Media

Results, standings, rankings, and winner announcements may be published by the organising chess club and/or EVENNECT, including on websites and social media pages.

Photographs and video recordings may also be taken during the tournament and may be used for event-related purposes, including publication on websites and social media. Such content is used for event documentation and community purposes, and not for targeted advertising or marketing.

Participants acknowledge that results and event media (photos/videos) may be published. Neither EVENNECT nor the organising chess club guarantees the timing, availability, or accuracy of publication, and neither party can control the time required for posting or publishing results.

15. Ratings and Federation Reporting

Results may be submitted to relevant organisations or federations, including the English Chess Federation (ECF), for rating, grading, and official record purposes.

Participants acknowledge and accept that disqualification, withdrawal, leaving an event early, missing rounds, incomplete games, forfeited games, or other participation issues may affect their rating or official record.

The treatment of such results is determined by the applicable federation’s rules and policies. EVENNECT and the organising chess club do not control how ratings are assessed or recorded and are not responsible for any rating impact.

16. Contact and Support

For any issue, support request, or clarification relating to a chess event, please contact us via our Contact page or email mail@evennect.co.uk.

17. Identity Verification

EVENNECT reserves the right to request identification or verification from participants, including before participation, during an event, or for prize distribution.

Verification may be required for fair play, fraud prevention, eligibility checks, safety reasons, or compliance purposes. Failure to provide requested information may result in refusal of participation, disqualification, or withholding of prizes.

18. Eligibility

Participants must comply with applicable laws and any eligibility requirements stated for the relevant event. Where participation by anyone under 18 is allowed, the requirements in Section 24 below will apply.

19. Technical Issues

EVENNECT is not responsible for internet connectivity issues, device failures, third-party platform outages, software issues, or other technical problems affecting participation. Participants are responsible for ensuring they are able to access and participate in the event.

20. Taxes

Participants are responsible for any taxes, duties, reporting obligations, or similar liabilities arising from any prize or payment received. EVENNECT does not provide tax advice.

21. Records and Audit

EVENNECT may keep records relating to event participation, payments, prize distributions, results, communications, and verification for the purposes of dispute resolution, fraud prevention, legal compliance, safeguarding, and event administration.

22. Safety and Law Enforcement

EVENNECT is committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all participants.

Any unlawful, threatening, abusive, or seriously disruptive behaviour, including nuisance caused during an event, may result in immediate removal, disqualification, forfeiture of entry fees and/or prizes, suspension, or ban from future events. Where appropriate, EVENNECT reserves the right to report such behaviour to relevant authorities, including the police.

23. Acceptance

By registering for or participating in a chess event, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to these Chess Event Terms in addition to the main EVENNECT policies.

24. Minors and Supervision

Any participant under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian when attending an event.

EVENNECT and/or the organising chess club do not provide supervision for minors and do not verify the presence of a parent or guardian. Responsibility for the safety, supervision, and conduct of any minor attending an event rests entirely with their parent or legal guardian.
